East Yorkshire-based haulier Simon Gibson Transport has seen its turnover more than double in three years.

The company, which worked primarily in the construction sector until 2007, said diversification following a downturn in construction activity, was to thank for its success.

From 2012 to 2014, the group saw its turnover grow from £6m to £13m (up 20% on 2013's £11m).

In its accounts for the year ending 31 December 2014, Simon Gibson recorded a pre-tax profit of £1.2m. In 2012 the company made a pre-tax profit of £524,114.

Founder and MD Simon Gibson, who has seen the business grow from a single vehicle in 2000 to its current fleet of 88, said: “Prior to 2007, our business was 90% focussed on serving the construction industry, but we quickly realised that we needed to use our specialist skills in other sectors in order to prosper despite the property market crash.”

While the company still has customers in construction, they now account for just 35% of the company’s workload. Now, the company has expanded its reach to the glass, foundry, plastics and food industries.

Gibson added: “Last year, which was our best year ever, we invested £3m in extending our fleet and we’re confident that we’ll hit our target of £15m turnover for 2015.”
