A Kent skip operator has had to pay more than £20,000 in fines and compensation after being found guilty of running an illegal waste site.
An investigation into Lawrence Haulage, formerly Lawrence Grab & Skip Hire, began after the owners of a trading estate in Ash became concerned about the company’s activities.
Instead of empty skips being brought back to its premises, lorries were bringing skips full of waste, which was then tipped at the rear of the yard and caught fire on several occasions.
The Environment Agency (EA) discovered piles of waste, including aggregates, soils, stone, metal, plastic and wood up to 20 feet high.
It was apparent that the waste was being tipped illegally as no permits or exemptions were registered at the site.
Director Daniel Lawrence was fined £1,733 and ordered to pay costs of £7,435 when he appeared before Maidstone Magistrates’ Court.
He was also ordered to give the industrial unit owners £10,850 in compensation and was disqualified from being a director for five years.
Matt Higginson, EA environment manager for Kent, said: “Through our officers’ investigations, this prosecution sends out a strong signal to others that we will continue to fight tirelessly to combat illegal waste crime and bring those responsible to justice.
“We all create waste, and we all have a responsibility to ensure it is handled correctly.
“We thank the owners of the trading estate for bringing this to our attention,” he added.
