The boss of Bedfordshire skip haulier A5 Skip Hire has been ordered to pay £2,500, after he was discovered running an illegal waste operation.

In a case brought by the Environment Agency (EA), Luton Crown Court was told how EA officers discovered the facility - run by John Fletcher - at Clay Hill Farm, Bedford, in August 2009.

Officers found 17 skips containing mixed waste at the site. Fletcher pleaded guilty to depositing storing and sorting waste without an environmental permit granted under the Environmental Permitting (England and Wales) Regulations 2007.

He was fined £1,500 and ordered to pay £1,000 towards costs.

Catherine MacDougal, EA officer, says: "Illegal waste operations like this encourage others to behave in the same way putting the environment under threat."
