Following a two year trial period, Solstor UK replaced 12 of its standard Volvo FH models with 6x2 FH with I-Save tractor units earlier this year. Since the new vehicles have joined the fleet, many drivers have experienced fuel economy improvements of up to 20%.

Graham Doe, managing director of Solstor UK said: “Switching to Volvo’s turbo compound technology has been a game-changer for our fleet. The substantial improvements in fuel efficiency and our drivers’ overall experience highlight the benefits of this cutting-edge technology.

“Over the two-year assessment period we witnessed firsthand how this innovative technology can transform our fleet operations, recording mpg figures previously thought unattainable. In the end, it was a no-brainer to welcome the 12 new trucks into the business earlier this year.”

Solstor UK’s 12 new trucks are equipped with 500hp Euro 6 compliant engines offering peak torque of 2,800Nm. The vehicles use turbo-compound technology to maximise fuel efficiency. An extra turbine is installed after the turbocharger which reuses excess energy from the exhaust. This technology means drivers can maintain lower revs and a higher gear for longer periods of time.

Volvo’s I-Save package includes its predictive cruise control system I-See. The system analyses the road ahead to optimise vehicle performance to cope with different gradients, supporting better fuel economy. The FH tractors are also fitted with roof and cab side air deflectors to boost aerodynamic efficiency.

While the vehicle itself can offer fuel savings, driver behaviour is key to realise the best economy. Using Volvo Connect, Solstor UK worked with Volvo to tailor driver training around reducing idling time and using cruise control.

Doe said: “Our driver trainer worked closely with Volvo, analysing detailed reports generated every month to refine our team’s driving style over time for optimal performance. Through the initial trial, it became clear the I-Save trucks were the best fit for our operations, which led us to transition our entire Dartford-based fleet to these models.”
