South West Truck & Van has launched the UK’s first CNG-powered 6x2 tractor unit.
The S-WAY NP, which is adapted in-house by the Iveco dealer, is powered by a 460hp Cursor 13 petrol engine. It features a lightweight second axle, and a pair of 350-litre carbon fibre gas tanks made by Hexagon Agility. Pressurised to 250 bar, the tanks are 70% lighter than steel, and help to give the tractor an unladen weight of 8 tonnes. It has a maximum range of 350 miles between fills.
According to Javier Rodriguez fleet & specialist vehicle director at South West Truck & Van, the dealership is expecting to sell between 150 and 200 units per annum. He says with biogas currently costing 91p per kg, a typical operator covering 150,000km per annum, is likely to see a payback within 18 months.
South West Truck & Van already has customers lined up, including Romac Logistics, Freight Systems Express Wales (FSEW) and Campeys of Selby.
- The new truck was launched at CNG Fuels’ new Avonmouth site. Claimed to be the world’s largest public access bio CNG truck filling station, this is the ninth site the company has opened in the UK.
Iveco will be exhibiting at Road Transport Expo at NAEC Stoneleigh (30 June to 2 July), and one of its 4x2 S-WAY NPs will be taking part in the Ride & Drive. Register now for FREE.
