Following a trial period with an electric demonstrator, Sparks Transport has added a Volvo FM Electric 4x2 to its fleet of 93 trucks. Supplied by Russell Woof, area sales manager at Volvo Truck and Bus Wales and West, the vehicle is expected to work as many as six days a week and cover up to 90,000km annually.

Jonathan Sparks, managing director at Sparks Transport, said: “Sustainability is central to our business plan, so it is hugely exciting to be able to welcome our first heavy duty electric truck. We run a mixed fleet here, but Volvo was the only manufacturer that could provide us with an electric product that would fit seamlessly into our operations.

“The team at Truck and Bus Wales and West has worked diligently on this project to help us pinpoint exactly where electric trucking can work for us, and the demonstrator proved that. We’re looking forward to seeing the real-world results across the coming years.”

The FM will mainly be used for a contract to transport Refresco beverages to Tesco stores. Fitted with the maximum six batteries, the electric model has a range of around 300km. Three electric motors create 666hp and 2,400Nm of torque. Charging time at a 250kW DC charger is 2.5 hours and 43kW AC charging can replenish the battery in 9.5 hours.

Alongside I-See predictive cruise control and driving modes to improve efficiency, the FM Electric features safety equipment such as forward collision warning, advanced emergency braking and side collision support.

Sparks Transport specified the vehicle with a Globetrotter cab fitted with leather upholstery, suspended and heated driver’s seat and dual armrests. The tractor has full air suspension and features extras including additional storage, a 50mm mattress topper and a 28-litre fridge.

Repair and maintenance will be taken care of with a five-year Volvo gold contract. This covers proactive battery monitoring and preventative maintenance on associated electric powertrain components.

Volvo will be exhibiting at Road Transport Expo, which takes place at NAEC Stoneleigh between 4-6 June. Registrations are now open, so book your free place now!
