A former employee of Canute Group has been sentenced after taking a truck on a joyride in Nottinghamshire and stealing £135 of fuel.

Worksop Magistrates' Court heard that on 1 July, 19-year-old Lewis Macdonald stole a Scania lorry that Canute operated for retailer Wilkinsons from the Wilkinsons depot in Worksop.

The theft occurred a day after Macdonald quit his job as an apprentice mechanic with Canute, which he had held for two years. He had been criticised at the firm over timekeeping.

The HGV was driven to Harworth on to the A1 and M18 before being taken back to the depot.

Approximately £200 worth of damage was done to the lorry and £135 of diesel was stolen.

Macdonald admitted to theft, taking a vehicle without the owner's consent and driving without insurance. He was sentenced to 120 days in a Young Offender Institution.
