Tesco has received consent for a new regional distribution centre (RDC) in Whitely, Reading, located at a former Heineken brewery.
Both Reading and Wokingham Brought Councils’ planning committees approved the scheme as the new site straddles both boroughs.
The RDC will deliver an 885,869ft² grocery warehouse located near the A33 with access to junction 11 of the M4. It could create as many as 950 jobs.
The plans also feature a 17,222ft² vehicle maintenance unit, and Tesco estimates the 24-hour centre will see 750 two-way HGV movements each day.
It will also feature 48 goods-in and 48 goods-out bays on either side of the building, with parking for 270 trailers. Own-account operator Tesco hopes to have the new RDC open by Christmas 2012.
