Tesco makes electric food deliveries with Iveco eDaily

Tesco’s first Iveco eDaily has joined its Horwich home delivery fleet. Later in the year an additional 150 eDaily models will join the fleet as Tesco decarbonises its deliveries. 

Rob Smallwood, fleet manager at Tesco said: “The delivery of the Iveco eDaily electric home delivery van to our Horwich store is an exciting step as we move towards a fully electric fleet across the UK by 2030.

“The extended range the eDaily offers will enable us to reach more customers in a single trip at our bigger catchments stores, and help us reach our commitment to be carbon neutral in our own operations by 2035.”

The eDaily’s electric motor has 140kW and 400Nm of torque. Rapid charging at 80kW adds 62 miles of range in 30 minutes and 22kW AC charging can be used at local stores. The refrigerated bodies are manufactured and fitted by Solomon Commercials and use the 15kW e-PTO. Additional cooling is provided by a 12V e-PTO which powers the GAH Transport Refrigeration unit. This allows the complete system from powertrain to refrigeration to be zero emissions. Different driving modes can be selected to boost efficiency too.

In addition to the total cost of ownership benefits eDaily affords, this fleet will also dramatically reduce delivery emissions.”

Tesco’s delivery fleet has featured the Iveco Daily since 2010 so adding the eDaily to the fleet was a natural progression as the company works towards its sustainability goals. The Daily platform is favoured thanks to its tight turning circle which aids manoeuvrability in urban and residential areas. The diesel version is fitted with the Hi-Matic automatic transition so drivers should see a smooth transition to the eDaily.
