About 400 jobs are set to go at Tesco's distribution centre in Milton Keynes. The supermarket, which employs more than 1,500 people at the Fenny Lock site, plans to shut down the automated picking operation there. Subject to consultation with unions, the trunking operation will close by September 2007.

But a Tesco spokesman says the site will not be closing: "We will support all affected staff through the difficult period ahead and will do as much as possible to find them an alternative role in Tesco." The spokesman could not confirm whether affected workers would be offered positions at Tesco's new distribution centre at Goole, East Yorkshire, due to open in October.
