Transport for London (TfL) has advised operators to plan ahead and not get caught out by road closures over the festive period.

A number of roads in central London will be closed for New Year’s Eve celebrations and the New Year’s Day parade on 31 December and 1 January, which are expected to attract large numbers of people.

TfL is also suspending the congestion charge from 25 December to 1 January.

The Westminster Bridge will be closed in both directions and Victoria Embankment will be closed between Southwark Bridge and Bridge Street from 5pm on 31 December. More extensive closures will begin from 8pm inside the area between London Bridge to Vauxhall Bridge Road and Oxford Street to Elephant and Castle. These roads will open when a full clean up of the area has been completed.

On 1 January, roads will be closed from 6am for the New Year’s Day parade, which will travel along Piccadilly, Lower Regent Street, Waterloo Place, Pall Mall, Cockspur Street, Whitehall and will finish at the junction of Parliament Street and Parliament Square. These roads are expected to be open again  by 6pm. Roads close to the event will also be closed.

Night closures between 10pm and 5am are also taking place on the M1 Southbound road between junctions 1 and 5 until 17 January.

TfL is urging operators to plan ahead and check traffic conditions by visiting www.tfl.gov.uk/trafficnews.
