TH White orders bespoke step-frame for farm deliveries

Problems accessing farms to deliver agricultural machinery forced Wiltshire-based TH White to commission a short-bed, triaxle step-frame trailer with extendable sides from Andover Trailers.

TH White Agriculture, a division of parent company TH White Group, delivers machinery across the UK and has to negotiate narrow lanes and tracks leading up to farms. The old trailer was too big and clumsy to reach some of the farms that TH White services, says agricultural sales administrator Mike Packham, "so we decided to go for a bespoke design".

The company required a compact trailer that could deliver conventional agricultural machinery, as well as being strong and wide enough to transport larger machinery, like combine harvesters.

With a short, fixed deck to meet the compact requirement, both sides of the custom-built SFCL40 tri-axle step-frame trailer extend outwards hydraulically on fabricated arms, from a width of 2.53m to 3.6m to accommodate wider loads, such as a combine harvester's front tyres.

The ramps are mounted on platforms so they can extend to the same width as the deck for safe loading. The trailer also has toolboxes under the fixed platforms, a lifting rear axle, and has a remote-control BH550 hydraulic winch.

"We looked around to see what other people in the agricultural machinery industry had, and everyone who used Andover Trailers seemed to have come away with a product that scored high in both of those areas, so we followed suit," he says.

TH White runs two articulated trucks, and 170 service vans with 28 lightweight trailers.
