Mercedes-Benz dealer Sparshatts of Kent has supplied Thames Group with seven Actros 2545 tractor units with flat-floored BigSpace cabs.

The Dartford-based haulier specified the vehicles with 450hp straight-six engines, PowerShift 3 automated transmissions, colour-coded bumpers, sliding fifth wheels, fridges and the optional Predictive Powertrain Control system.

They are the subject of a CharterWay contract hire agreement from Mercedes-Benz Financial Services and replace Euro-5 Actros trucks that Thames Group leased from a third-party provider. The Dartford branch of Sparshatts is carrying out routine inspections and maintenance.

Thames Group operates 15 tractor units, a single 7.5-tonne rigid and a fleet of vans.

Operations manager Daniel Treadwell said: “While the widely varying nature of our work means it’s difficult to make direct comparisons, they are definitely more economical than our other vehicles.

“The Actros are always a good mile ahead and the difference is sometimes as much as 2.2mpg.”
