The danger of diesel spills

Diesel spills are a killer, and there's no other way of putting it. According to Department for Transport statistics, diesel spills were the cause of some 16 deaths and 3,000 serious road accidents, generally involving motorcyclists, between 2000 and 2004. Now MT's sister title Truck & Driver has launched a campaign - Save Fuel, Save Lives - to eradicate this danger from UK roads.

Diesel deposited on the road is as slippery as black ice and motorcyclists are only too aware of the danger it represents on bends and roundabouts. Spills are caused by overfilling fuel tanks, not refitting the filler cap correctly, damage to the filler neck or worn seals. Some truck operators are already taking action to combat this problem - Sainsbury's won the 2006 Kill Spills award promoted by the British Motorcycle Federation for its role in tackling diesel spills. Its fleet is fitted with anti-siphon devices from TISS Trailer Security.

And TISS is supporting the campaign by offering readers a 10% discount on its impregnable anti-siphon device. As well as protecting other road users from spills through its unique design incorporating a float valve, it will save you money through preventing expensive diesel thefts. To buy the device, call TISS on 01253 400401, or email and remember to tell them you're a Motor Transport reader.
