Thompsons will unveil a new hotbox body for 4x2 and 6x2/4 chassis at Road Transport Expo.
Known as the Tarmaster, it is claimed to offer improved performance in road repair and resurfacing applications.
One notable feature of the new body, which is seen here on a DAF LF chassis, is its smooth one-piece side panels. These are designed to facilitate the clean and effortless discharge of hot Tarmac. The interior of the body is divided into two compartments, allowing for the transportation of different Tarmac specifications. An "easy-flow" floor surface further aids in minimising residue when tipping, while tar chutes provide easy access for shovel work.
To maintain optimal payload protection against heat loss, the Tarmaster is equipped with a pair of full-length in-line roof panels. These can be operated via hydraulic cylinders from both the dashboard rocker switch inside the cab and exterior switches located on the nearside control panel.
The hotbox's heat source comprises two LPG gas bottles mounted in a storage box on the body's vertical front panel. By locating the gas bottles on the headboard, the length of vulnerable gas pipework running along the body has been reduced. Temperature control for the payload is achieved via an electronic control box mounted on a rear gantry situated behind the truck cab.
Another distinguishing feature of the Tarmaster is its superior insulation, with every external panel fully insulated to minimise heat loss. This reduces the need for the burner to operate extensively, resulting in reduced gas consumption. Thompsons has opted for a purpose-built British burner with integrated safety features and valves, enabling efficient heat flow throughout the body.
The rear gantry of the Tarmaster features a storage box for work-related equipment, such as shovels and road signs. Access to the storage area is provided by foldaway steps on each side of the vehicle, complemented by an electrically operated crane for lifting heavier items.
Thompsons has incorporated stabilising underfloor tipping gear into the Tarmaster to ensure maximum stability during extended periods of raised body operation, common in Hotbox work.
Simon Shields, joint MD at Thompsons, said: "Our aim was to take the whole Hotbox concept a whole step forward. The result is Tarmaster, which is what we are launching."
- You will be able to see the Tarmaster, and plenty more from Thompsons’ extensive product range at this year’s Road Transport Expo. The show takes place at Stoneleigh NAEC on June 28-30. It’s FREE to attend, and registrations are now open.
