Bulk haulage firms looking to recruit their next generation of talent should head along to DAF’s stand on day two of Tip-Ex/Tank-Ex in Harrogate.
Visitors will be able to learn more about simple ways to get involved with schools and colleges in their own local areas, such as mentoring, workshops and work experience through the Think Logistics project.
The initiative, led by Abbey Logistics MD Steve Granite and former senior TC Beverley Bell, has already set up a national network of logistics academies where industry volunteers engage with youngsters to teach them about exciting career opportunities.
Career Ready, a charity which co-ordinates the activities of the logistics academies, will be talking to visitors on the DAF stand about this successful approach and how it can benefit hauliers looking to attract new recruits.
“Overall, the logistics industry needs 1.2 million new recruits by 2022 and that means a big increase in the number of young people being recruited,” said Ian Nichol, head of logistics at Career Ready.
“20 schools and colleges currently host Career Ready logistics centres where industry volunteers engage with nearly 600 young people via mentoring sessions, employability skills masterclasses and by offering work placements."
He added that by the end of this year, more than 1,000 students will have attended a Think Logistics workshop, delivered by industry experts, such as hauliers.
Truck manufacturer DAF will also be on hand to talk about its support of the scheme and different ways to get involved.
Phil Moon, marketing manager at DAF Trucks, said: “The road transport industry is fundamental to almost every aspect of our lives and Think Logistics has an ambitious, but reasonable, objective to increase awareness of the numerous and diverse career opportunities that it provides for young people.
“Operators are crying out for new staff at all levels of their businesses and so they should be interested to learn how Think Logistics can help them engage with schools and colleges in their local area.”
