Longs of Leeds is embarking on a comprehensive fleet expansion and renewal project, which sees TIP supply it with 50 new generation DAF XF 6x2 tractor units and 17 SDC curtain-sided trailers.

The trucks have been supplied by TIP Group's powered asset specialist Grayrentals, initially on five-year leases. They are equipped with DAF’s Digital Vision System, which replaces traditional external mirrors with cameras and screens. The addition of a kerbside window in the passenger doors help the trucks to achieve a 3-star DVS rating. They are also equipped with fridge-freezers and microwaves, to aid driver comfort.

The pillarless tri-axle SDC trailers, which are supplied on a 10-year leasing arrangement, are finished in Longs of Leeds distinctive livery. They feature ENXL specifications and boast internal straps and a tighter floor bearer pitch for improved strength. Two of the trailers are double-deck curtainsiders, equipped with a fixed three-quarter length second deck, and will be deployed into the Pall-Ex network.

To reinforce safety, compliance, and operational efficiency, Longs of Leeds has specified TIP's advanced Electronic Braking Performance Monitoring System (EBPMS). Known as BrakePlus, this system enables continuous monitoring of brake performance, so significantly reducing the need for frequent physical roller brake tests.

Andrew Long, director of Longs of Leeds, emphasised the benefits of BrakePlus, stating: "The system will provide our fleet team with the ability to monitor brake performance continually, enabling the business to require only one physical roller brake test to be conducted throughout the year. This leads to significant cost savings, reduced downtime, and fewer workshop visits."

The integration of BrakePlus into the fleet is part of TIP's Insight range of telematics, offering Longs of Leeds track and trace functionality, utilisation reporting, and load monitoring capabilities. Following a successful three-month trial on two existing trailers, BrakePlus will also be retro-fitted to an additional 86 trailers already in the fleet.

The trailers will be managed by TIP Group's Knottingley branch, with regular servicing and maintenance being provided either at the branch or through TIP's mobile service units.
