Builders' merchant Travis Perkins is testing a number of fall-prevention systems on its vehicles to reduce work-at-height incidents among its drivers.
The solutions, developed jointly with Travis Perkins' bodywork supplier Massey Truck Engineering, range from the simple, yet cost-effective use of ratchet straps strung between extended uprights to create a 'boxing ring' around the perimeter of a 7.5-tonne urban delivery vehicle, to fitting purpose-built lightweight aluminium tubular guards to the top of existing drop-side bodywork on its larger 26-tonne rigids and smaller beavertail plant and equipment delivery trucks.
Travis Perkins' group head of transport, Graham Bellman reports that safe access to vehicles and prevention of falls from the load area is an ongoing process: "We've looked at a variety of systems working with Massey, as well as the Builders' Merchant group within the Freight Transport Association."
Bellman also says that each system will be evaluated using driver feedback.
"We've had fall-prevention systems on our curtainsider vehicles for a while," adds Bellman, "however, the non-curtainsider vehicles are now the main focus for us."
