DAF Trucks has put a number of electric vehicles into service with operators in the Netherlands. The new generation DAF electric trucks are based on the XD and XF models which received international truck of the year awards. The vehicles produce up to 350kW/480bhp and are available with a modular infrastructure of two to five battery packs to facilitate ranges up to 500km. The batteries used are lithium ferro phosphate which offer high energy density, thermal safety, lifespan and charging cycles.

Gerlof Oegema of Oegema Transport in Dedemsvaart, said: “We are covering almost 500km with our XD Electric on a single full charge. With an additional charge we would be able to cover 1,000km a day, which creates interesting opportunities for long distances.”

As charging infrastructure across Europe becomes more robust and widespread, operators will be able to maximise the functionality and range of their electric trucks. To support operators transitioning to electric trucks, DAF dealers are offering packages which include charging points and specialist driver training.

Ewout van Wijk, CEO of E. van Wijk Logistics in Giessen, said: “We still have some challenges regarding the charging infrastructure at our premises but the XF Electric is meeting all our expectations. The driver is also very impressed with the performance of the truck, the quiet and comfort in the cab and the ease with which the truck drives. When driving off there is immediately a lot of torque available.”

Peter Leegstraten, manager purchasing and innovation at Cornelissen Transport, said: “The vehicles match perfectly with our ambition to switch to zero-emission transport. And the vehicle concept behind these DAF trucks is perfect for urban areas. The large windscreen, the long belt lines, the additional window on the passenger side and the digital cameras ensure perfect direct vision and together with the electric powertrain they form the ideal combination for us.”
