A truck driver working for Royston, Herts firm JK Environmental has been arrested on suspicion of dangerous driving after 21 people were injured when his vehicle collided with a train in Suffolk.
The 38-year old driver, believed to be a Lithuanian national living in Ely, Cambridgeshire, is in custody after being arrested on suspicion of endangering safety on the railway, British Transport Police has confirmed.
The arrest follows an accident on 5.35pm on Tuesday 17 August, when a two-carriage train struck a sewage tanker carrying sludge at an unmanned level crossing at Little Cornard near Sudbury.
Following the incident, the Sudbury to Marks Tey train remained upright, but the first carriage derailed.
The lorry was split open, spilling slurry across the scene.
According to Network Rail, the level crossing was on private land, and anyone intending to cross it needed to call the signaller to raise the gates; Network rail says it has no record of a call being made.
A spokesman for ATW Investigations says a large scale investigation is being conducted on behalf of insurance claims for Kneesworth, near Royston-based JK Environmental, but would not comment further.
Of the injured, one 58-year old man sustained life-threatening injuries and remains in a serious but stable condition.
