An HGV driver has been sent to prison for two years after causing a three-vehicle collision that left a man with life-changing injuries.

Kevin Hubbard was driving on the A19 southbound near Sunderland in November 2014 when he collided with a Ford Transit van that had broken down in the nearside lane.

According to Northumbria Police, van driver Keith Jameson, 63, was at the front of his vehicle trying to open the bonnet when the crash occurred. A third vehicle was also badly damaged but the driver was not seriously injured.

Doctors battled to save Jameson’s life, but he has remained in a hospice since the incident and needs 24-hour care.

Hubbard, 57, denied a charge of causing serious injury by dangerous driving, but he was found guilty by a jury at Newcastle Crown Court.

On 22 February he was sentenced to prison and given a three-year driving ban.

Chief inspector John Heckels, head of motor patrols, said: “This case shows the importance of making sure you are aware of everything that is happening on the road, especially when you are travelling at high speed.

“The defendant in this case will spend the next two years in prison but Keith Jameson's life was completely changed that day and he and his family are still having to come to terms with that.

“This sentencing will not change what happened to Mr Jameson but hopefully the custodial sentence sends a message about the consequences of not driving responsibly.”
