This week TruckNet UK has had the usual diverse postings from the industry. Container work seems to have received more than its fair share of comments this week, from advice to those new to the work to comments about a certain unpopular container yard.
On initial look, container work may seem simple: drop box on back, go to delivery/collection, open doors, go to sleep. But as with most sides of transport there are hidden catches which can catch out the new or unwary driver. An excellent thread started by an experienced driver setting out on containers for the first time brings in a wealth of knowledge. Sliding trailers loaded 20-foot boxes in or out of the cab when getting the box lifted? This is an invaluable read for those for whom containers is a new experience.
One container depot in particular is discussed at some length by the drivers unfortunate enough to have to go there. The feeling seems to be that this particular depot is the king of making the simple task of lifting a container off and replacing it with another one as complicated and time-consuming as possible.
While this type of thread is fairly commonplace on TruckNet UK, normally a driver or two will attempt to give another side to the story - perhaps explaining why a certain depot acts in a certain way. However this thread is unusual in that not one driver posting so far has had a good word to say about it at all. Operators of container depots who are concerned that the place mentioned may have something to do with them are welcome to take a look in the Professional Drivers forum, and of course add their comments/explanations.
Keeping on the containers theme, the old Essex hauliers thread in the Old-Time Lorries, Drivers and Companies forum continues to see drivers post photos from their private collections, with many old and long-gone container companies featured. However one company still attracts enough attention to warrant its own topic many years after it disappeared. For those who remember the company nicknamed Hollywood Haulage, there is a feast of photos to enjoy.
