A car driver and passenger have been killed after they were involved in a collision on the A5 with a truck operated by Pentons Haulage.

The accident occurred on the southbound carriageway of the motorway, between junctions 3 and 4 near Frankley services in Worcestershire, at about 11.38am last Friday (13 May).

The HGV driver from the chilled-distribution specialist based in Oswestry, Shropshire, was found trapped in his cab. He was later released with the help of ambulance and fire crews and treated for a back injury.

After being immobilised using a neck collar and spinal board, he was taken to Worcester Hospital for further assessment and treatment.

The incident closed the north and southbound carriageways in both directions.

A West Midlands Ambulance Service spokesman says: "Despite the best efforts of ambulance crews arriving on scene, nothing could be done to save the two casualties, and they were confirmed dead shortly after the arrival of the emergency services."

The incident is being investigated by the Central Motorway Police Group.

Pentons Haulage was unavailable for comment.
