West Midlands-based operators are being encouraged to sign up to the Midlands Truck Watch scheme launched last week at the West Midlands Business Council's Regional Business Crime Conference.
Run by Warwickshire Police, with the co-operation of Staffordshire Police, West Mercia Constabulary and West Midlands Police, the scheme aims to crack down on truck crime in the region, which according to TruckPol figures is the UK's number one hot spot.
West Midlands Business Council's regional business crime forum chairman Mike Cherry says: "By joining the scheme, all truck drivers and haulage owners will be sent alerts by email, fax, text messages or telephone, so they can be on the look out for stolen trucks and loads - and then let the police know if they see anything."
Registered users will also be able to ring a voicemail box to check for the latest alerts.
"While this is not the silver bullet that will solve truck crime, it will mean that the police will gain more intelligence that will help put pressure on the criminals by putting them on the back foot," says Cherry.
Kate Gibbs, the RHA's head of communications, says: "Despite all the preventative measures, truck crime is still on the up, so to have another region that's committed to reducing truck crime is good news."
Registration is free and can be done online.
