UPS is at the centre of a Department for Transport (DfT) investigation looking at how a fake bomb was transported from the UK to Turkey undetected.

A spokesman for the express delivery giant says: "Two weeks ago, a suspicious package travelled in the UPS network abroad an all-cargo aircraft from the London to Istanbul. UPS is co-operating with the British DfT's investigation of the incident."

A Turkish man delivered a package containing a timer, wires and detonator hidden inside a wedding cake box, to UPS's Camden, North London depot. UPS then drove it to a London airport where it was flown to Istanbul, and only then was the suspicious parcel detected.

A DfT spokesman says: "The government is aware of this incident and takes it very seriously. We have already begun an investigation that will look at aspects of this incident, including UPS's procedures."

UPS responded by saying it has "a multi-layered approach to ensure security".

A 26-year-old man from North London has been arrested on charges of a suspected bomb hoax, the Metropolitan Police confirms.
