UPS Supply Chain Solutions closed the doors on its Southampton site.

UPS confirmed that a consultation with employees at the Southampton facility was concluded at the end of October.

A company spokeswoman told Roadtransport.com: "The company aimed to transfer as many of these employees as possible to other roles within the company, and we worked closely with individuals to meet their needs. Unfortunately, we weren't able to find suitable alternative roles for all employees."

The spokeswoman could not confirm exactly how many people would lose their jobs as a result.

She added: "UPS took the decision to re-evaluate its operations in the UK in order to best meet the needs of its customers. The decision will not [have an] impact [on] supply chain and freight customers in the area."

Earlier in the year, as part of plans to close five domestic service centres across the UK, DHL Express also shut its Southampton site.

"The DHL Express Southampton service centre closed in early April when the operation transferred to an improved facility at Eastleigh," revealed a DHL spokeswoman. "Twenty-six staff also transferred to this facility and one person was made redundant as part of the move."
