UPS is trialling different powertrain options for its fleet to support the London 2012 Olympics, the firm has revealed.
Alan Williams, director, London 2012 sponsorship and operations, UPS UK and Ireland, tells Roadtransport.com that the company is investigating three areas it can assist in making the 2012 games "the greenest ever".
He says: "We are looking at experimenting with our dedicated 150-strong vehicle fleet for the Olympics. We won't rule out deviating from just electric vehicles, and are currently looking at biofuels and hybrid diesels."
With warehouses in Stevenage and Tilbury, due to open in October and January 2011 respectively, the company is also looking to become more multi-modal, and take advantage of rail and the river Thames to distribute to east London.
Williams says UPS will also manage recycling and packaging disposal during the period.
"We are one of the leaders in sustainability and expect to make an announcement in November detailing how we will implement green logistics further," Williams concludes.
