The seven United Road Transport Union (URTU) staff bailed to report to Greater Manchester Police on 6 September have had their bail extended to 5 October.

It is the second time the men, who were arrested in February as part of a fraud investigation relating to URTU’s Driver CPC training activities, have had their bail extended.

A spokesman for Greater Manchester Police told Commercialmotor.com the extension provides the police with more time in which to gather evidence and decide, in conjunction with the Crown Prosecution Service, whether charges will be brought.

Further bail extensions cannot be ruled out, added the spokesman.

The seven people involved include URTU general secretary Bob Monks, national officer Mel Thornton and regional officers Lee Pimbley and Mike Billingham.

All were arrested as part of a police and DSA probe into a health and safety Driver CPC course that was held on 4 September 2011 but fell short of the mandatory seven hours demanded by JAUPT.

URTU general secretary Bob Monks declined to comment on the latest bail extension but stressed that the organisation "continues to co-operate fully with the ongoing investigation".
