Electric bulk haulage and HGV charging provider Voltloader, has ordered two FM Electric tractors from Volvo to bolster its all-electric fleet.

Based from the company’s Cambridgeshire depot, the vehicles will be put to work transporting grain and agricultural produce across the region. Paired with weightlifter tipping trailers, these have been configured to optimise payload.

The 4x2 tractor units have 540kWh of battery capacity and will be charged using 150kWh DC charging at the depot. In 2024, Voltloader intends to make these charging points available for wider customer use. The trucks are on a Volvo Gold contract covering preventative maintenance and repairs.

Richard Moorse, head of retail sales at Volvo Truck and Bus Centre South & East, said: “We are excited to be working with Voltloader who are showing leadership in addressing a significant transition for our industry. In fact, more and more transport companies are realising that they need to start their electrification journey right now, both with the environment in mind and for competitive reasons to satisfy customer requirements for sustainable distribution. With Volvo Trucks wide and deep offering, it is totally feasible for far more transport companies to go electric.”

Dave Rose, Voltloader’s CEO and founder, said: “Volvo has been able to provide exactly the right specification of vehicle and support services to meet our demanding requirements. In addition, their team has demonstrated incredible knowledge of the product which has helped us to accelerate our plans.

“Our customers in the agricultural sector not only have emissions targets that they are trying to address, but their customers, the food manufacturers and retailers, are also demanding this. Voltloader not only allows them to deliver their business needs and the needs of their customers today, but also to partner to support the longer term transition of their own fleets.”
