Volvo calls for on-board breathalyser regs

Volvo is calling for the urgent introduction of regulations to govern on-board vehicle breathalysers, as the quality and accuracy vary enormously. "It is vital that these products are accurate and that people do not buy sub-standard ones," says Volvo director of public affairs Lennart Pilskog, "and ours are extremely precise."

At £900, Volvo's Alcolock is also one of the most expensive, but the truck maker insists that it makes very little profit on every unit sold. Alcolocks are currently specified on more than 30% of new Volvo trucks sold in Sweden, and the manufacturer hopes other markets will embrace it with similar enthusiasm.

It would like to see a Europe-wide uniform drink-driving limit, set closer to the current Swedish level (20mg/ml). Volvo believes the UK drink-driving limit (80mg/ml) to be too high, and will set its new Alcolock option at the Swedish level.
