Volvo looking to axe 136 jobs

In another sign of the current downturn hitting truck sales, Volvo Trucks has started a 90-day consultation over almost 140 potential job losses across its wholly-owned dealer network and head office. Although the company says it had a strong first-half of the year, results from Q3 reflect the marked economic slowdown across Europe.

Amanda Hiatt, marketing and PR director, Volvo Trucks, says: "Consequently, Volvo Trucks has taken rapid action by adjusting production levels accordingly and is also in the process of reviewing its cost base across Europe.

"Although our aftermarket business in the UK and Ireland is stable - and even slightly up on the same period last year - we will have to make adjustments to our overheads in line with a reduced demand in new truck sales, as we announced earlier this month."

She says that some compulsory redundancies may be necessary, but these are yet to be finalised.  Hiatt adds: "These - if they go ahead - include a total of 136 redundancies, which will affect both our head office at Warwick and also our wholly-owned dealerships. As we are only just entering the 90-day consultation process, it would be wrong for us to discuss which areas may be affected."

Last week Daf announced it was consulting some 250 staff at its Leyland, Lancs plant over potential job losses on the back of falling orders.
