Volvo has released the first images of its new long-range FH Aero Electric 6x2 tractor unit, which boasts a range of up to 600km on a single charge.

To maximise battery space, the truck features an e-axle and a mini tag axle, freeing up room on the chassis for up to eight batteries. Longer-than-usual cab fairings help disguise the extended wheelbase needed to accommodate them.

When paired with a standard tri-axle semi-trailer, the truck can operate at a maximum gross combination weight of 44 tonnes in the UK and 46 tonnes in Ireland.

“This is a real breakthrough in zero-emission transport,” said Roger Alm, president of Volvo Trucks. “Now, transport companies can operate really long distances with electric trucks without having to compromise on productivity. The superfast charging and high payload capacity make this a very competitive solution.

“Electric trucks in long-haul operation will make an important contribution to reducing CO₂ in our industry, since this is where you can save the most per truck. This is positive news for transport companies and for society.”

The FH Aero Electric offers up to 780kWh of battery storage and is Megawatt Charging System (MCS) ready as standard. It can also be charged via CCS at up to 350kW. Fast charging from 20% to 80% takes around 40 minutes.

Alongside its vehicle line-up, Volvo also offers services to help operators identify where electric trucks can fit into their operations, and what infrastructure is needed to support them.

“We have the industry’s most complete offer of electric truck transport solutions,” added Alm, “and more than five years of experience supporting thousands of customers, big and small, to go electric. Volvo Trucks is the go-to company for transport operators ready to start their decarbonisation journey.”

The FH Aero Electric will be available to order from Q4 2025, with customers invited to sign a letter of intent in the meantime.

Volvo will be exhibiting at Road Transport Expo 2025, which takes place at NAEC Stoneleigh between 24-26 June. It’s free to attend and registrations are now open.
