In an attempt to bring an end to years of inconsistent headlamp alignment checks, Vosa has introduced an electronic measurement system to be used in HGV annual roadworthiness tests.
Following a consultation with operators ('Vosa sees the light on headlamp aim tests', CM 11 September 2008), from January, Vosa will be using an electronic beam tester for headlamp aim tests.
The changes aim to reduce the 20.75% of first-time test failures attributed to headline misalignment under the previous system.
Andy Mair, head of engineering policy at the Freight Transport Association (FTA), comments: "We welcome Vosa's simplification of the test with a headlamp aim standard 'window' and the removal of the human error factor with this electronic method."
Previously, dealers had complained the test had been problematic because misalignment is easy to occur through simple obstacles such as speed bumps on the way into a test centre.
