Residents in Whitby, North Yorkshire have been working with Trading Standards to report trucks that break the weight restrictions in the town.

There has been a ban on lorries above 3.5 tonnes using Church Street between 10.30am and 4pm since 1996, but a rise in the number of HGVs flouting the rules has forced Trading Standards to take action.

Locals have been trained to recognise trucks that are bigger than 3.5 tonnes, record the details - such as registration number and haulier name - and then report them to Trading Standards. Any driver identified by Trading Standards as breaking the ban faces prosecution.
