Wincanton may axe almost 900 jobs if it closes two distribution centres at Gloucester and Trafford Park following the recent sell-off of its chilled consolidation operations to Culina Logistics.
A statement from the logistics firm says: "[Following the announcement of the sale] Wincanton has been working with Culina to review the shape of the enlarged chilled business and to establish the appropriate operational structure in order to provide the best service to its customers.
"Further to discussions with Culina, it is proposed to migrate volumes from Wincanton's sites at Gloucester and Trafford Park into the Culina network, with effect from early April 2009. This proposal will affect the employment of all Wincanton employees at these sites and their associated outbases, which amounts to approximately 450 at Gloucester and 415 at Trafford Park.
"Should the proposed migration of volumes go ahead, it is likely that both sites will close." The company says it is exploring options for alternative uses for both sites to avoid closure. It adds that for its contracts with Tulip and Cargill Meats Europe, there will be no changes to the current operating locations and management structures under its plans.
