Wincanton wins Comet contract

European supply chain specialist Wincanton has won a three-year contract with electronics retailer Comet on its National Transport Network.

Wincanton will take over Comet's transport operations from its Skelmersdale, Corby, Westbury, Harlow and Bellshill bases - it has been running the Harlow and Westbury sites in partnership with Comet for the past six years.

As part of the deal, 150 Comet staff will transfer to Wincanton from 1 July. A Wincanton spokesman says: "No jobs are being lost in the process if anything, it may create new jobs."

Keltruck bosses buy TruckEast

Former Keltruck directors John Biggin and Simon Hobson have bought another Scania dealer, TruckEast, in a buy-in/management buy-out deal worth more than £10m. Smith Electric Vehicles wins Sainsbury's order

Sainsbury's is replacing 20% of its online delivery van fleet with electric vehicles. The 3.5-tonne Smith Edison, built by Smith Electric Vehicles, will have a range of 150 miles per charge. The supermarket chain claims the vehicles will save 45 tonnes of CO2 during their first year of service. It plans to replace its entire online fleet with electric vehicles by 2010.Smith Electric has signed an agreement with Ford to use its Transit shell as a base for the Edisons.

No reduction in cigarette smuggler's jail sentence

A transport manager who used his haulage company contacts to mastermind the smuggling of at least 25 million cigarettes into Britain has been told he deserves every day of his four-year jail term.Malcolm Noble was an executive at the South Shields wholesale and clothes distributor Visage Import when he moved into the smuggling racket as a sideline.
