Several companies are to be prosecuted in relation to three separate incidents that took place during the construction of London’s Crossrail project, including a worker being crushed by a tipper.
Terrance ‘Ian’ Hughes suffered severe leg injuries in January 2015 when he was crushed by a tipper truck whilst working between the Bond Street and Paddington section of the tunnel.
On 7 December the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) informed Camberley-based BAM Nuttall; Chiswick, London-based Ferrovial Agroman (UK); and Sandy, Bedfordshire-based Kier Infrastructure and Overseas that it intends to prosecute them in relation to three separate incidents.
They will appear at Westminster Magistrates’ Court next month to face four charges each, one of which will relate to Hughes’ death.
Two charges will concern the death of Rene Tka’cik, who was crushed by falling concrete while working on the Fisher Street cross-over tunnel in March 2014.
The final charge relates to an incident where worker Alex Vizitiu suffered head and hip injuries when he was hit by a high pressure mixture of water and concrete while concrete lines were being cleaned.
They will face two charges under the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974, and two charges under the Construction (Design and Management) Regulations 2007.
HSE’s head of operations Annette Hall said: “We have concluded following thorough investigations that there is sufficient evidence to prosecute and it is in the public interest to do so.”
