Cupar looks at truck ban

Trucks could be banned from the high street in Cupar, near Fife, because the area is failing to meet statutory air-quality targets.

Ron MacPhee, head of strategy and policy at Fife Council, confirms that a truck ban is being considered: "At present we're just coming to the end of a year of monitoring the air quality and we'll then consider the best approach to tackle the problems." He points out that the Bonnygate shopping street in Cupar is narrow, and because pedestrians cross frequently traffic often backs up.

"Other suggestions include moving the street furniture, introducing a one-way system and building a bypass," he adds. "All these ideas will be discussed with the local community and road users."
