Dawsonrentals supplies three Actros units to Highways England to catch unsafe drivers

Dawsonrentals has supplied Highways England with three unmarked Mercedes-Benz Actros units, which will be used by the police  catch unsafe drivers in the act.

The police have been running a single Iveco in this capacity for two years, during which it stopped 1,821 HGV drivers acting unsafely.

Truck drivers accounted for 44% of the 4,176 driver spotted from the police trucks' vantage point.

Pleased with the results from one truck, Highways England has taken one replacement truck and two additional vehicles from Dawsonrentals.

The new Actros cabs are fitted with concealed blue lights under the grille and flashing red lights on the back of the vehicle.

Supplied on a three-year lease, the trucks also have a range of cameras and recording equipment on board to film evidence of unsafe behaviour.

Richard Leonard, Highways England’s Head of Road Safety, said: “Highways England has been funding a single cab for the past couple of years and we’ve been impressed with the impact it’s had on improving safety. Over 4,000 dangerous drivers have been pulled over, with police action ranging from verbal warnings to prosecutions.

“We’ve therefore decided to fund two extra unmarked HGV cabs to continue to target dangerous driving on England’s motorways and major A roads, improving safety for everyone.”

Highways England's cab safety initiative launched in April 2015, and has seen 28 police forces participate across the UK.

James Gysin, Southern area sales director for Dawsonrentals, said: “We are delighted to be involved with this project and Highways England, and the fact that it’s our second Crown Commercial Services win makes it doubly pleasing. It is a clear indication of the growing awareness of the extent of our abilities and just how big a player Dawsonrentals can be in even quite specialist sectors of the market.”
