Mercedes Work Ready covers new and Approved Used chassis

Mercedes-Benz has launched an off-the-shelf offering for its trucks to allow customers to get vehicles in a hurry. The WorkReady programme covers both rigid and tractor units and covers both new and Approved Used chassis. Trucks are available to customers “at very short notice” and can be put to work in some cases within days.

Units currently WorkReady include Actros StreamSpace and BigSpace tractor units, as well as 530hp Actros1 models with GigaSpace cabs. Rigid vehicles including the 8x4 Arocs are also available with Boweld and Thompsons tipping bodies. There’s also Thompsons tipper-grabs and Hyva hook-loaders – which can also be found in an 8x2 configuration on the scheme. Mercedes’ full range is represented by the programme with 26-tonne Antos and Actros models with box bodies, as well as 18-tonne Antos trucks. FUSOs will also be available at short notice with their range of Canters from 3.5 to 7.5 tonnes.
Speaking about the WorkReady programme, Mercedes-Benz Trucks UK marketing communications manager Ben Grayson said: “WorkReady is aimed at operators who, for any one of a multitude of reasons, may not have the time to acquire a vehicle in the conventional way. The process of ordering the base chassis from a dealer and then, when it arrives in the UK, waiting for one or more third-party suppliers to build the body and, potentially, add ancillaries or undertake further modifications, can take months. For some, that’s just not an option. If they’re faced with an urgent business requirement, WorkReady can provide the answer.”
Approved Used trucks available through Mercedes will come in all manner of models, sizes and specification but will all be under seven years old and have less than 700,000km on the clock.

Grayson added: “Most customers will continue to order their chassis from the factory, then get them built or converted by a bodybuilder, and one or more other parties. However, given the time these processes take, some operators will be better served by a WorkReady vehicle.”

New Volvo FMX Tipper mucks in at RK Bell

volvo fmx tipper

RK Bell of Bridgewater, Somerset, has taken delivery of a new Volvo FMX tipper from local dealer Truck and Bus Wales & West. The 8x4 truck has been fitted with a Boweld tipper body and will be used for a variety of jobs from muck shifting to rental.

The company runs a mixed fleet of 10 trucks including an MAN TGX and Volvo FH tractor and a DAF CF flatbed.

The latest truck comes with the mid-sized 4,100mm wheelbase and a Winter White painted Day cab. Under the bonnet is Volvo’s D13K unit, which can churn out up to 420hp and 2,100Nm and is hooked to Volvo’s reputable I-Shift automated transmission, although this was initially greeted with scepticism from a company driver.

RK Bell transport manager Wayne Salter said: “The FMX replaced a manual Scania P-series, and our driver had his reservations. After completing the day’s training provided by Volvo, it won him over and he’s now impressed, which is good news as its going to be his office for the next six years, covering about 40,000 miles per year.”

As a lot of work will be off-road on construction sites and quarries, Salter specified the truck with the steel safety cage design and single-reduction drive-axles with differential and cross locks. It also has the Extra High B-Ride chassis height to protect the vehicle from damage when off-road, giving it more ground clearance for obstacles on site. On the back is a Boweld Taperlite tipping body.

“I’ve always been a fan of Volvos and was keen to take advantage of the new Truck and Bus Wales & West dealerpoint, which has recently opened in Bridgwater. We bought an FH there last year, and found it easy to deal with, so it was a straightforward choice when it came to replacing. We backed it up with a two-year gold service contract,” said Salter.

“In my previous working life, I drove tippers and I had Volvos. I always liked the make; I liked driving them and found them to be very well-specced. They are comfortable, the layout inside the cab is driver-friendly and so we thought we’d give them another go.”

Established in 1941, RK Bell is into its third generation of family ownership and is one of the oldest civil engineering firms in Somerset.
