Transport fatalities fall in 2019/20
Figures from the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) showed that 11 people died in transport and storage in Great Britain last year, less than the five-yearly average of 14.
The construction sector had the largest number of deaths during 2019/20 with 40, the agriculture, forestry and fishing sector followed by the manufacturing sector reported the second and third highest figures, with 20 and 15 respectively.
The HSE said around 10% of all fatal injuries to workers occur in transport and storage and although there was a reduction in the most recent period, the numbers are prone to annual fluctuations.
Falls from height was the main cause of fatal injury across all sectors (29) accounting for around a quarter of all worker deaths, followed by being struck by a moving vehicle (20) and being struck by a moving object (18).
The HSE said that even without Covid-19, 2019/20 was on track for a lower number of deaths over the year compared with other recent years.
