DTC Dorrington appointed as acting TC

The secretary of state for transport has appointed Miles Dorrington as acting traffic commissioner for the West Midlands Traffic Area. Dorrington, who has been a deputy TC since 2008, replaces Nick Denton, who retired from the post in May. Where the office of any TC becomes vacant, the secretary of state may appoint a person to act as a TC for England and Wales pending the appointment of a new TC. A former barrister and solicitor, Dorrington also has experience as a judge. His temporary appointment will terminate once a new TC takes up the post on a permanent basis.

Senior TC Richard Turfitt paid tribute to Denton: “His skills and considerable contribution to the jurisdiction will be difficult to replace,” he said. “The West Midlands needs a dedicated traffic commissioner, so we hope that an expedited recruitment campaign will find a worthy successor.”

Denton previously worked as private secretary to the leader of the House of Commons and on secondment to the European Commission in Brussels, before becoming the UK’s transport negotiator at the EU. He was appointed as TC for the West Midlands in March 2012. Denton remains in post as a deputy TC.
