Bluerock bosses agree to deal on disqualification
Two directors of a Northern Ireland haulage firm which failed with debts of nearly £400,000 have avoided a court hearing by agreeing to disqualification undertakings. The Department of Enterprise, Trade and Investment accepted a seven-year disqualification undertaking from Charles William Young, of Muckamore, in respect of his conduct while a director of County Antrim-based Bluerock Distribution, which went into liquidation on 30 April 2004.

Log book issued for stolen truck
A truck dealer in Staffordshire has expressed disbelief that the DVLA issued a new log book for a truck stolen from its site which was then offered for sale on the internet. Stuart Wolstenholme, manager of West Pennine Trucks, says the Scania 124 6x2 tractor unit was also put through an annual test after it was stolen from its forecourt in Stoke-on-Trent in April. Target Express loses £26m, but turnover is up
Target Express Holdings has made a pre-tax loss of £26m for the second year in a row, but says it is very pleased with progress.In the latest financial results, chairman David Hoare says the group is "extremely pleased with the progress achieved across all areas of the business". Group turnover grew by 4% to £146m in the year to April 30, 2006, from £141m in 2005, but pre-tax losses remain unchanged at £25.6m.

Lorry ban on Forth Road Bridge means Fife link threat
At the freight sector debate in the Scottish Parliament, Conservative MSP David McLetchie called delays in starting work on a new bridge or tunnel "unforgiveable". Vans beat trucks at HNT
Avonmouth-based HNT, which runs a 26-strong van and truck fleet, is realising the benefits of running large vans over 7.5-tonners. MD Chris Potter tells Motor Transport that the company has recently trialled a 5.5-tonner Renault Mascott panel van, which he says proved to have significant benefits over its six MAN 8.150 7.5-tonners. DfT warns on failure to download data
Truck operators may soon face fines of up to £5,000 if they fail to download and store digital tachograph information under a new offence of not downloading data. Operators may also have to provide digital tachograph data within 24 hours of a serious incident if requested by an enforcement officer.

Boss fined £29,000 for safety breaches
The boss of a Cambridgeshire freight company has been fined a total £29,000 for serious breaches of health and safety regulations at his depot. Christopher Synowiec, who runs Cam European Freight Services of Bassingbourn, admitted breaching Health and Safety at Work regulations during a hearing before Cambridge magistrates. Transrent collapse 'caused by low rates'
Former Transrent chief Tom Hart says the collapse of his trailer rental and financial services group was sparked by low rental rates "killing the industry" and a failure to secure new funding. A Wolverhampton haulier's licence has been suspended for a week and he has been told to sack his transport manager after admitting a series of vehicle offences. Syntex to demonstrate to TC it is 'legitimate'
A Felixstowe company set up only six months ago and now employing two staff with links to a firm that lost its licence is being called before the Eastern Traffic Commissioner to discover if its own licence will be withdrawn. The involvement of two Syntex staff members, Mark Fielding and Hussein Ahmed, with 3PL Solutions has sparked concern among local operators. Fielding and Ahmed were directors of 3PL Solutions around the time its licence was revoked in October 2006.

TC calls for tighter controls on O-licence applications
A Traffic Commissioner is calling for an overhaul of the O-licence application system following a licence application by a director with a criminal record and links to another director who had been disqualified indefinitely. Concern over Yearsley driver jobs as depot shuts
Yearsley Group admits the closure of the Birds Eye depot in Hull could lead to redundancies among its drivers – but says it will attempt to redeploy them. T&G and Amicus unions plan to merge
The Transport and General Workers Union (T&G) is set to merge with Amicus, the engineering and technical union. The leaders of both unions have agreed the merger in principle; now it must be ratified by a ballot of members. Foreign driver blamed for death of six
A truck driver was unlawfully killed in a crash caused by a migrant worker who was in breach of the Working Time Directive, an inquest has ruled. Philip Woolley was driving a Hovis LGV on a single-lane stretch of the A52 in Lincolnshire when a minibus driven by unlicensed Portuguese driver Orlando Manuel Dos Santos Lourenco tried to overtake another vehicle in the early hours of 14 February 2006.

'Dangerous' rapist denied LGV licence
A truck driver with a string of convictions for violent offences against women - including some committed in lay-bys - has been banned indefinitely from holding an LGV licence. David Tarren was convicted at Teesside Crown Court in 1988 of attempted rape and jailed for 42 months. In 1999 he was jailed for a further eight years for two rapes, two assaults and procuring a woman to become a prostitute.
