Trucks are increasingly being stolen for their value as scrap and recycled materials, UK authorities have warned the road haulage industry. Two possible causes have been identified for the rise in truck theft. First is the high prices now paid for scrap metal on the international markets, which is in turn driven partly by China's insatiable demand for metal.

Reading-based J Mould Waste has added four new MAN TGA 8x4 tippers and a 12-tonne TGL to its fleet, and the demolition and waste recycling operator says more will follow. "We have a few other marques on the fleet, but we're going to replace them with MANs because of the no-change factor of Euro 4," says managing director John Mould. "We were quite clear that we didn't want the hassle of AdBlue, either on site, or on the truck."

KN Drinks Logistics has held its annual Driver of the Year competition. More than 70 competitors from around the UK took part in the event at the Prodrive facility in Kenilworth, Warwickshire. Drivers completed a series of road-based exercises. These included dealing with a road traffic accident scenario and driving in a confined space. The event aims to raise safety awareness and promote good driving practice throughout the organisation.

Tachosys has launched Digi-fob, a handheld digital tachograph card reader, which is designed to help drivers avoid infringements. The battery-operated keyring-sized device, which is launched in association with the Freight Transport Association (FTA), is operated by simply inserting a driver card. A single button on the rear of the Digi-fob allows the user to instantly access a variety of information. This includes last activity, last daily rest, weekly rest, weekly summary and holidays.
