PM Commercials: Dealer Drop-In

A quick visit to PM Commercials led us to an interesting selection of top quality and varied used trucks, but first owner Paul May lets us in on the secrets behind this current crop of used vehicles.

“Our stock is now running at about 80% Euro-6,” May says, “but there is a great opportunity to buy up Euro-5 vehicles still with low kilometres. Euro-5 trucks now are fantastic value. I can’t say the price has collapsed, but it has. If you’re in Devon, Cornwall or even the outskirts of London but never going to go in, you don’t need to buy a Euro-6 truck, and we’ve got some brilliant Euro-5 trucks to sell.”

Since 2017, we’ve had TOM Vehicle rental, Gulliver’s and more recently AXIS Fleet Management all going bust and it has led to a great selection of rigid vehicles on them market which we’ve been actively involved in purchasing and selling. It has given us some great stock, especially the Gulliver’s with such low kilometres. It’s been a great opportunity for hauliers to buy this equipment. We’ve all said it would never happened again, because now all the companies are doing thousands of miles a year so whatever is coming back is high mileage. Those sorts of vehicles are coming to the end now. We’ve probably got another two or three months of them.”

2017 Scania P-series 8x4

There’s a lovely pair of low-mileage Scania P410 8x4 tippers in the yard of PM Commercials both with exceptionally low distances on the engines. MoT’d until July and June next year they have, respectively, covered just 124,000km and 126,000km. Both are fitted with Thompson’s steel tipping bodies, EdBro ram and electric sheets and air tailgates. They have manual transmissions and full 360 degree camera systems.

“These are absolutely top spec, the best of the best. They’re FORS compliant and a real pair of beauties,” May says.

2013 Mercedes-Benz Actros drawbar

Don’t let the faded red paintwork put you off this 2013 Actros wth Streamspace cab. It’s fitted with a Dhollandia 1 ton tuckaway tail lift. It has full air suspension on it’s 5.8m wheelbase chassis. It’s covered a respectable 447,000km since new and currently has an MoT until February 2020.

“This is extremely affordable because of its age, but it’s still a Euro-6. It won’t cost you thousands because of the age, so you’re only paying a small premium for a Euro-6 vehicle,” May adds.

2012 MAN TGM Fridge

“This is a classic high spec Euro-5 that we still sell,” says May. “It’s a meat railer, so has all the hooks for hanging carcasses and it’s absolutely the greatest spec and quality.”

The TGM box with fridge unit has covered 351,000km and is MoT’d until May 2020. It has a Solomon 25ft body with rear and side doors and uses a Carrier Supra 850 for cooling. The 250hp sleeper cab truck also has an automatic gearbox.

2014 Volvo FM beavertail

Aside from being a good-looking truck, this Volvo FM 8x2 caught our eye for a different reason while visiting. The reason being that it was being heavily scrutinised and then test driven while we were there. Sadly it was sold to the buyer that afternoon, and they’ve done particularly well, getting a Euro-6 unit with just 330,000km and a full year of MoT. It also has an I-Shift gearbox, reversing cameras and those flip toe ramps mounted to a 29ft Andover body.

“This is what we do,” May tells us as the buyers walk into the office to discuss details. “It’s brilliant spec, and definitely not run of the mill.”
