P Harper & Sons adds I-Save Volvo FH to fleet

P Harper & Sons has added a Volvo FH with I-Save to its 18-strong fleet after being impressed by the fuel consumption of a similar vehicle bought last year.

The second Volvo FH with I-Save in the Huntingdon-based fleet is a 6x2 Lite model with 460hp engine and pusher axle, reducing weight by up to 490kg compared to a regular 6x2 and allowing P Harper & Son’s bulk tipper operation to be more productive.

“We run a variety of trucks in the fleet, but we hadn’t had a Volvo for quite a while before putting the FH into service,” said Adam Harper, P Harper & Sons transport manager.

“We always look for the best overall product in terms of fuel, reliability and value for money. People had told us about Volvo’s new turbo compound engine, and we thought we’d give it a go. The driver absolutely loved it from the start and the fuel performance it has given us has been excellent, so we decided to go back for another one.”

Supplied by Volvo Truck and Bus Centre South & East the unit will cover around 140,000km per year and has been taken on a five-year Volvo Gold Contract with servicing and maintenance to be carried out at Volvo Truck and Bus Centre South & East’s depot in Peterborough.

“The fuel was definitely the main selling point for us,” said Harper.

“We were very impressed with the first one and this new truck has settled in very well too. We pride ourselves on running a prestigious, good looking fleet and the latest addition certainly fits the bill,” he added.

Mertrux Truck & Van opens a £2m truck-dedicated workshop at its Derby HQ

Mertrux Truck & Van, which this year celebrates its 50th anniversary, has invested £2m in a new truck-dedicated workshop at its Derby headquarters.

The building, located at the rear of the site, incorporates seven full-length truck bays, two of which have pits. Equipment includes new column lifts and brake roller testers. In addition to improving capacity and efficiency, truck parking has also been increased.

Dealer principal Andrew Kerrane (pictured) said: “Once again, we have underlined our commitment and determination to provide customers with the industry-leading aftersales support they’re entitled to expect.

“Demand for our maintenance and repair support was extremely high when we embarked on this project, and despite the challenges presented by the pandemic we’ve remained busy throughout the last year. The overall increase in the number of available bays is assisting with throughput and means we can get both trucks and vans back on the road more quickly than ever before.”

Mercedes-Benz Trucks MD Wolfgang Theissen added: “Mertrux has been a fantastic ambassador for the brand over the last five decades, during which our longest-serving dealer partner has never wavered in its commitment to outstanding customer service.

“By investing in this impressive, truck-dedicated workshop, Mertrux has demonstrated once again that it can be relied upon by operators to do whatever it takes to restrict downtime and keep their Mercedes-Benz and FUSO vehicles out on the road and earning.”

Like the long-established maintenance facility on the same site, which will now be used solely for lighter vehicle, the new workshop is currently open until midnight on weekdays, and on Saturday mornings. A return to 24-hour operation is expected as Covid restrictions are lifted and the economy gathers pace again.
