Removers and showmen hit out at 'unfair' LEZ

The British Association of Removers (BAR) and the Showmen's Guild have branded London's low-emission zone (LEZ) as unfair - they warn it will put the majority of their members out of business. Jonathan Hood, BAR's senior vice-president, says: "We estimate that the zone will be a £56m hit against the removals industry every year, even though our trucks spend very little time on the road. "

Three Iranian Kurdish immigrants were arrested at GPS Sprayers' site in Station Yard, Thame, Oxon on Friday 5 January after stowing away in the back of driver Graham Cheyne's truck from Germany. 

Bulmers plans further growth

Teeside’s Bulmers Logistics plans further growth after expanding its fleet last year: the bulk and container operator is opening depots in Hull and Immingham. It has a new business director, Andrew Spence-Wolrich, to spearhead the growth plans, and it has a new livery for its 250 trucks. Bulmers says its "significant growth" in 2006 was backed up by an expansion of its Teeside site to 12 acres and the establishment of an additional container sales, lift and repair facility in Hull.

Ryder appoints new general manager

David Morris is the new general manager for logistics business development and solutions at Ryder. Morris is responsible for sales and new business strategy at the logistics solutions company. Joining Morris is Jason Roberts, who is Ryder's new business development manager.

Montracon appoints new sales manager

Martin Gaines is the new sales manager, refrigerated product, at Montracon. He is responsible for refrigerated trailer sales for the North-East and South-East and joins Montracon from Schmitz Cargobull, where he was regional sales manager.

Northgate boosts turnover and profit

Interim results for the six months to October 2006 show that light CV hire company Northgate increased revenue by 48% to £262.1m and pre-tax profit by 34% to £37.8m.

Concern over Yearsley driver jobs as depot shuts

Yearsley Group admits the closure of the Birds Eye depot in Hull could lead to redundancies among its drivers – but says it will attempt to redeploy them. The frozen foods business, which was sold to venture capitalist Permira in September 2006, is to close its Hull plant this September with the loss of 600 jobs.
