Abacus Logistics has taken delivery of the UK’s first new generation MAN TGX tractor unit.

Based at Southampton Docks, the firm specialises in import and export container haulage, reefer services, express pallet distribution and storage and devanning for containers.

The TGX 6x2 26.510 tractor features the latest GX cab and is one of 36 44-tonners on the company’s fleet. It was supplied by local dealership Harwoods Truck and Van Centre in Totton and Abacus has a further five MAN tractors on order.

The inaugural GX is fitted with safety gear including ESP, EBA, adaptive cruise control with stop-go, an advanced lane departure warning system and LED cornering lights.

Creature comforts comprise comfort steering, advanced media system with satellite navigation, a multi-function steering wheel, electric glass sunroof, MAN’s SmartSelect infotainment control and Alcoa Dura-Bright alloy wheels.

It’s powered by the manufacturer’s Euro-6(D) D26 12.4-litre 510hp 6-cylinder engine, which generates 2,600Nm from 930rpm. The new generation TGX is also fitted with a low-friction drive axle, which is the catalyst for a claimed 8% fuel economy improvement over the previous Euro-6(C) drivetrain.

“Safety, driver comfort and fuel efficiency are all major consideration factors when we look at purchasing new vehicles,” said Abacus CEO Peter Carr, “we need to ensure that do all we can to protect both our drivers throughout their working days and at the same time other vulnerable road users.

“High levels of comfort help ensure our drivers are both happy and productive during their day, and as fuel amounts to around 30% of total vehicle running costs, having an efficient and clean vehicle is paramount.

“We’re looking forward to both handing this new vehicle over to our driver, who is very excited to be handed the keys to the first new generation TGX in the UK and seeing the telematics feedback.”
