The introduction of Clean Air Zones (CAZ) in Birmingham has led to Jones Skips purchasing three new Euro-6 DAF FAN CF 340 6x2 rear-steer chassis refuse collection vehicles. The new trucks join a 39-strong fleet, 28 of which are DAFs.

Fitted with Day cabs, Dennis Eagle Olympus bodies and VWS weighing equipment, they were bought from DAF’s Greenhous Commercials dealership in Willenhall, Wolverhampton, which the company has worked with since 2005.

The new trucks operate across the West Midlands, including Telford, Lichfield, Tamworth, Central Birmingham, Stourbridge, Kidderminster, Wolverhampton and the Black Country. The new units also feature Spillard 360 degree cameras for increased safety when operating in urban environments.

Jones Skips’ commercial and business development director, Andy Yeomans, explained why he went for DAF: “We’d previously looked elsewhere at Volvo and Scania - we even have those marques’ tractor units on our fleet – but we thought their interiors were a bit basic and there weren’t many storage spaces.”

Maintenance is carried out by the company at its premises in Wolverhampton, and Yeomans stated that because Jones Skips has operated DAFs for so long, its mechanics are used to working on them: “They automatically know what the fault is and how to fix it.”

He admitted however, that Greenhous still plays an important role: “They turn things around quickly and with little fuss. Our three mechanics understand DAFs and, while we maintain them ourselves, access to parts is a swift operation.”

Freight in the City is the must-attend event for anyone involved in making urban logistics cleaner, safer, quieter or more efficient. This free event is taking place at Alexandra Palace, London on 6 November. Click here for more information and to get your free tickets.
