DAF has launched a new version of its CF Electric with a claimed range of more than 200km, double that of the previous model.

Available as a 4x2 tractor with a GCW of 37 tonnes, and as a 6x2 rigid with a 28-tonne GVW, it is fitted with a new 350kWh (315 kWh effective capacity) battery pack developed by electric vehicle specialist VDL e-power, which is 700kg lighter than its predecessor and said to allow for a greater payload.

The battery can be charged in 75 minutes from a 250kW charging point which, according to the manufacturer, means it can cover up to 500km a day if it is charged during loading and unloading periods and the driver’s break.

The battery temperature is kept at a constant 25 and 40 degrees Celsius, which is said to help with durability and consistency of performance.

The company trialled the original CF Electric with Dutch and German operators in 2018 and the second generation, which featured new software and a new dashboard, went on sale in 2019.

DAF has also devised a series of route simulation models so operators can visualise and plan for the truck’s deployment and where and how to implement the necessary charging infrastructure.

“With its increased range, the new CF Electric strengthens our position at the forefront of electric road transport,” said Ron Borsboom, DAF’s executive director of product development. “This truck has been developed in response to the rising demand for better air quality in our cities and lower CO2 emissions. 500 fully electric kilometres per day is something transport operators can really work with.”

European orders for the extended range CF Electric begin this month and first deliveries are expected in early 2021.
