DAF has launched an Electric Hydraulic Steering (EHS) system for its New Generation 6x2 tractors and rigids with steered pusher axles.
Available for XD, XF, XG and XG⁺ models, it is 30kg lighter and 0.3% more fuel efficient than the previous mechanical variant. Another operational advantage is that it frees-up space on the chassis, allowing for a 40% larger fuel tank. It’s also more manoeuvrable, with a claimed turning circle improvement of 12%.
The system, which sees the two steering arms and the auxiliary drop arm being replaced by an electronically controlled steering pump unit, continuously calculates the optimal steering angle for the steered pusher-axle based on speed and wheelbase. This is said to guarantee precise steering.
At speeds of over 45kmph, the new axle locks itself in the straight-ahead position, ensuring maximum vehicle stability.
DAF expects it to prove particularly popular with heavy agricultural and construction-related operations, as well as waste collection and bulk operations.
